Debut of Compliance Manager Summit a Success

By Carolyn Schwaar, IBSMA.com

The Compliance Manager Summit held last week in San Jose, Calif., (Feb. 12) broke new ground in addressing the specific interests of software company compliance managers. More than 65 participants tackled topics ranging from virtualization and cloud computing, compliance management in developing markets and settlement negotiations.

Attendees included senior-level representatives from Adobe, IBM, Attachmate, Oracle, Progress Software, VMware, Flexera, and industry consultants from Anglepoint, KPMG, Deloitte and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The highlights of the day were a vendor panel discussion featuring MicroFocus, Netapp, Oracle and Genesys, and a customer panel including license-management trendsetters Kaiser Permanente, CSC, Wells Fargo and Visa.

“This event rises above the industry norm and stands apart for the number of subject matter experts,” said one attendee, a compliance executive for a storage provider.

Top-rated IDC analyst Amy Konary, always a favorite at IBSMA events, spoke on the latest trends in software licensing. "Software companies, despite customer requests over the last few years for simpler licensing models, have been slow to deliver," said Konary. The customer panel picked up on this point and unanimously agreed that their biggest challenges are a seemingly endless list of hard-to-measure and hard-to-track license models and few tools to accurately inventory and calculate software usage.

Oracle License Management Services (LMS) updated the group on its Oracle-verified tool program. Introduced in 2010, the program has grown to include seven data collection tools verified by Oracle to provide data to supplement the LMS review process. IBM reviewed the latest updates and future plans for its License Metric Tool, a key component of its compliance program.*

“The topics were relevant to what’s happening in our industry,” said a senior manager from a global IT outsourcer. IBSMA director Steven Russman announced, “We’re creating a compliance-industry track at our June SAM Summit conference in Chicago. Demand for this information is high.”

Compliance Manager Summit 2013 was a production of the International Business Software Managers Association, a 8,000-plus worldwide membership organization. For details on IBSMA’s SAM Summit conference, visit SAMSummit.com.
