Conference Session & Speaker Information
IT Asset Management: Industry Perspectives
Steven Russman, ECP
Cost reduction and regulatory and license compliance are the top reasons to have a software and IT asset management (ITAM) program in a company, according to a recent ECP survey. More than 75 percent of firms responding to the survey spend more than $1 million on IT annually, and a majority expressed optimism about their future budgets for these programs. The results provide insight into the size and scope of ITAM and software asset management (SAM) programs and initiatives in a wide range of organizations. In this session Steven Russman, managing partner of ECP and publisher of Technology Asset Manager, presents an overview of the survey results and queries a panel of industry thought-leaders for their perspectives and predictions of what’s to come.
This session replaces “Conquering Software Piracy: An Interactive Session with the Business Software Alliance."
Going from Better to Best With Software Management
Dan Griffith, Freescale Semiconductor
Today’s electronic design automation (EDA) software tools can easily cost $300,000 per copy, with some topping the one million dollar mark. Escalating prices and complex licensing models call out for improvements in forecasting requirements and managing software utilization with intelligent and proactive software asset management tools and techniques.
In this session Dan Griffith will outline Freescale Semiconductor’s approach to managing an EDA software portfolio valued at over four-hundred million dollars ─ including the infrastructure and internal tools the company developed to optimize license usage. Dan will cover usage reporting, metrics and the need for real time analysis and on-demand license allocation. This is sure to be a fascinating session covering a mature software-asset management program.
Dan Griffith is manager of Freescale’s Comprehensive Software Asset Management team (CSAM). The team is responsible for managing and distributing EDA software licenses to Freescale’s design centers worldwide. Freescale Semiconductor is a leading global semiconductor company focused on providing embedded processing and connectivity products. The company was formerly a division of Motorola, now a separate public company as of December 2004.
A 26 year Motorola employee, Dan has 13 years experience in managing and supporting electronic licensing, as well as negotiating Motorola’s software license contracts. Prior to forming CSAM in June of 1998 Dan managed EDA software licensing and the UNIX computer environment for a division of Motorola.

Building Contract Management Systems: From Requirements to RFP
David Ochroch, Fannie Mae
It's every procurement manager's dream: All vendor contracts available online to all staff, full-text searching, metadata describing all contracts, obvious parent-child contract relationships, data security, and never a missing contract file again. The reality is that, to get there, you need a software platform to house and extract the data; scanning equipment; data-entry clerks to scan, add metadata, and hunt down the inevitable missing contracts; and a method to update contract information once entered. In this conference session, David Ochroch will talk you through the journey from dream to reality, including critical success factors and a survey of what's available in the commercial landscape.
David Ochroch is a recognized technology negotiations expert, specializing in software, telecommunications and IT hardware contract negotiation and acquisition. Currently the manager of strategic sourcing with Fannie Mae, Mr. Ochroch formerly served as director of IT contract management for Sallie Mae, where he established a reputation and skills in data-center consolidation, outsourcing multiyear volume software agreements, and mainframe systems acquisitions. With more than 20 years experience in IT, he holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and certifications in finance, economics, data processing, negotiations and contract management.

Automating Key Aspects of Software Asset Management (SAM)
Michael Witthaus, Novell Inc.
Why do so few organizations have effective SAM programs?
This presentation will focus on the key to a successful and sustainable SAM program: automation. Today’s SAM tools and related methodologies rely too much on manual processes and data cleansing activities, are generally reactive in nature, require months of planning and implementation, and focus too much on process and not enough on results.
The key to achieving the benefits promised by SAM lies in automation based on smart systems. Michael Witthaus, national account manager and ZENworks category specialist, will present on behalf of Novell Inc.

Jack Micklovich, Eracent Inc.
Traditionally, software license compliance has been measured by comparing the software reported to be in use within an enterprise and the software-purchase records. However, this approach does not address the concept of software license entitlements. Software license entitlements must address issues such as new versions, upgrades, foreign language versions and platform specific versions as well as contract terms. These nuances, which can materially impact software license compliance, are rarely captured in traditional methods of license reconciliation. This presentation will discuss the critical nature of tracking software entitlements, how the process can be automated and the benefits to the organization.
