"Organizations that track and reconcile basic usage data are more successful and are subject to fewer audits," says IBSMA director Steven Russman.

If your organization actively manages its Adobe, Microsoft, Oracle, IBM or Symantec products, it's less likely to be reviewed in the next year, according to results of our 2010 survey. Proactive management includes a well-developed software use policy, contract management and processes that rely on accurate data and tools. If you have these in place, Russman says, you'll breeze through your next compliance audit.

Additional components of an audit-ready license program are a policy of zero tolerance for unlicensed or improperly licensed software and a prompt and cooperative response to an inquiry from a publisher or enforcement agency. You can even stop a review early by negotiating well-defined audit provisions with publishers and third parties.

We're counting on your support!

The survey has 25 questions and can be answered quickly. The survey addresses the frequency of audit, traits of a successful license compliance program, audits by software companies, internal audits and external parties, industries targeted for audit, cost savings and risk reduction.
