ISO/IEC Working Group 21 to Finish 19770-2

Today, the International Business Software Managers Association (IBSMA) notified members of its SAM Standards Committee that ISO/IEC Working Group 21 is to resume work on the proposed ISO/IEC 19770-2 standard for software identification and tagging.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) informed the IBSMA that it will complete and publish the document, developed by the association’s members. In July, the IBSMA granted ISO the right to further develop and publish the work as an international standard.

Steven Russman, executive director of the IBSMA, said, “I look forward to seeing our members' efforts result in a standard being adopted by the software industry and companies around the globe."

In a public conference call held Sept. 12, Mr. Russman stated that IBSMA had concluded work on the ISO/IEC 19770 series and would participate in official standards development as a member of the United States TAG, the national body contributing to ISO/IEC SC7 standards development.

The U.S. does not yet have an official position on SAM standards, and the IBSMA plans to brief members at the March 2008 U.S. TAG meeting. “IBSMA is a member of the U.S. TAG, so I invite those interested in taking part in development efforts to contact me for details regarding the upcoming meeting,” Russman added.

The IBSMA will release a framework for the software-use entitlement standard, also prepared by the SAM Standards Committee, later this month. This framework will be available to the public free of charge. To request a copy, visit www.ECPweb.com/publications.html.
