ECPweb Releases Report: SAM Pros See High Demand for ISO 19770 Standards
ANN ARBOR, MICH. (Oct. 23, 2006) IT managers believe standards for software asset management are good for business and will save money, improve IT service and enhance a company's negotiating position. This is just one of the findings of a recent study by the International Business Software Managers Association (IBSMA) and ECPweb.com
The study, completed in September, found that although 76 percent of IT pros believe their organizations would support adoption of ISO 19770-1, the first international standard for software management covering 27 process areas, awareness of the particulars of the standard remains low.
Lacking legal requirement or compelling business reason to comply with the standard, many organizations will take the slower approach to the adoption of ISO 19770, the study found. However, end users view efforts to comply with the standard as important measures for preparing for the inevitable publisher audits and other compliance reviews.
The IBSMA report also uncovered a strong industry need for software tagging (identification) standards. End users are demanding software identification standards to make the job of inventorying and managing software and entitlement easier. In fact, 72 percent of IT pros indicated they would be very likely to buy SAM tools that support their efforts toward ISO compliance. For IT tool vendors, this means a new focus on creating tools that conform to—or enable end users to conform to—the standards.
The study includes the results of a survey of 88 IT managers from a wide range of organizations. These IT pros answered questions that ranged from their general awareness and acceptance of the ISO standards to questions about purchasing tools and software that align with ISO 19770, plus their certification plans, the perceived value of embedded license controls, and their knowledge of the specific content of ISO 19770-1 and -2.
According to the report, many North American managers are keeping a close eye on the United Kingdom, where ISO 19770 accreditation and certification programs are currently progressing through the approval process.
